Monkey Town

Monkey Town is situated on the N2 in Somerset West. It is a wildlife center for apes and monkeys, including a variety of other species. There are over 250 primates and 26 different exotic monkeys and apes, such as Tammy, Ruby, and Sunny. They are Monkey Town’s famous chimp sisters.

Visitors are able to observe and admire the over 700 animals from caged walkways. Monkeys are than able to roam freely on the outside.

Keep in mind to bring your camera along, this is the best way to capture the amazing animals in action and you get to share these moments with your friends and family. Who knows, maybe it will inspire them to tag along next time.

All the animals at Monkey Town follow their own specific well-balanced diet. Therefore visitors are not allowed to feed the animal, the keepers take good care of these animals so you don’t have to worry about whether or not these animals are hungry.

Monkey Town Animals

One of Monkey Town’s specialty includes taking in abandoned animals and captive-bred monkeys. All animals are treated equally, with love and care. This place is perfect for all age groups who are nature lovers. Monkey Town is home to many rescued and the workers take pride in it.

There is a huge difference between the primates. For instance:

  • The pygmy marmoset weighs less than 100 grams making it the smallest monkey in the world
  • Chimpanzees are able to learn basic human Sign Language
  • Washoe – a captive female chimpanzee- was able to learn American Sign Language with a vocabulary of 350 words.

What to do?

Visitors can enjoy the following activities:

  • Braai and picnic facilities – this is a great opportunity for friends and family to relax around the fire, eat some great food and enjoy a drink. Remember to bring firewood and grid, Monkey Town does not offer them.
  • Swimming – There are two swimming pools on site. A rock pool which is quite deep and a toddler pool for the little ones. The one pool consists of two slides going into the water. This pool is for 12-year-olds and younger.
  • Supertube – This is for the young and old, 70 meters of fun.
  • Interaction enclosure – for an additional fee of only R50 visitors can spend 15-20 minutes in this facility.

Business Hours

Monday to Sundays – 08h00 till 17h00, open 364 days a year. Open on Christmas but close at 14h30.

 

Monkey Town Rules

  • No pets allowed on zoo grounds
  • Cameras and video cameras for personal use only
  • During your visit you may be photographed or filmed
  • You’re not allowed to place children on or over fencing or exhibit handrails
  • No eating inside primate centre
  • Do not feed animals
  • Do not touch animals
  • Refrain from teasing or screaming at animals
  • Monkey town does not allow visitors to bring in their own beverages/alcohol. These items are for sale
  • Your bags will be searched when entering the premises
